A teenage girl has tragically died in her sleep at a boarding school in Shropshire. The Year 13 pupil passed away at Oswestry School on March 18, leaving her classmates and teachers saddened and shocked. The girl, 18, was discovered in her dormitory in the morning. School officials have not named the student, asking for privacy for her friends and loved ones to be respected. Both pupils and school faculty are receiving support during the mourning period. It is all an ‘incredibly difficult and painful time’ for the senior school on Upper Brook Street, a spokesperson told Metro.co.uk. The spokesperson said: ‘It is with immense sadness that we confirm the tragic news that an 18-year-old Year 13 pupil from Oswestry School passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Saturday 18 March 2023. ‘This is an incredibly difficult time for the whole school and our thoughts and prayers are especially with her family. ‘Our priority is supporting our pupils and staff, and her family. ‘We respectfully ask for privacy and compassion for the family and the school community during this painful time.’ Oswestry School is classed as an ‘ancient’ school, having been founded in 1407 as a ‘free’ school as it was independent of the church. This makes it the second-oldest ‘free’ school in the country. A West Mercia Police spokesperson said: ‘At around 9.30am on Saturday 18 March following a call from West Midlands Ambulance Service police attended the Oswestry School in Upper Brook Street in Oswestry. ‘A pupil, an 18-year-old girl, died. ‘There is believed to be no third-party involvement and a report will be prepared for the coroner, who has been informed.’
