The mum of a well-known Halifax man who played rugby for a host of local teams says she has been left "heartbroken" by his sudden death.
Ben Benn, from Siddal, died suddenly on Monday (August 22) leaving his family and friends "completely shocked". The 30-year-old dad played competitive rugby for a host of local league and union teams including Huddersfield Giants and Bradford Bulls.
One of his former teams, Siddal ARLC, paid tribute to Ben on Monday. In a post on Facebook, the club said: "We are in shock to hear the devastating news that one of our own Ben Benn passed away this morning.
"RIP Ben, deepest condolences to all his family at this sad time from us all at Siddal ARLFC #OneOfOurOwn." A Go Fund Me page has now been launched by his devastated family to help cover the costs of his funeral.
Writing on the page, Ben's "heartbroken" mum, Amanda Rathmell, said: "Many of you already know about the sad passing of our beloved Ben Benn... It has completely shocked our family, friends and people who had the honour of playing rugby with (him).
"He will be missed by so many people. At this very sad time we are asking for any help towards the funeral, as this is something we never imagined we would have to prepare for..."
Amanda added that any extra money raised for Ben would go to his son, Elliot. It is understood Ben also leaves behind five siblings, two step-siblings and his dad, Mick.
